One of the most compelling reasons to visit Alberta is its position at the junction of several major habitat zones. This transition zone, where boreal forests meet the parkland and foothills, is a hybridization mecca, where most Northern Flickers and Yellow-rumped Warblers are intergrades between subspecies, and Yellow-bellied and Red-naped sapsuckers hybridize freely. Nearby are the grasslands and spectacular Rocky Mountains, which each attract a different suite of birds. This diversity in habitat creates an under-appreciated biodiversity hotspot, particularly for birds.
From the majestic Great Gray Owl to the cryptic Yellow Rail, to the enigmatic Upland Sandpiper, these are all target birds on this tour. May is the prime time to visit this region as it’s the end of the migration and beginning of the breeding season, with many species advertising their territory in full song, making them relatively easy to find. We’ll get a taste of birding in the boreal forest, rocky mountains, foothills, parkland and grasslands, in only 8 days!
In addition to its rich birdlife, Alberta’s varied landscapes provide ample chances to see other wildlife, such as Elk, Moose, Bighorn Sheep, Pronghorn, and potentially both Black and Grizzly Bears. We’ll spend two nights in Canmore, near the historic and world-renowned Banff National Park. During our time in the Rocky Mountains we will visit the alpine, pristine glacier lakes, as well as spend time birding in the wetlands and forests in the heart of the Bow Valley.

Meet your local guide, Gavin McKinnon
Gavin has had a passion for birding from a young age, which stems from a family trip to Point Pelee National Park on the northern shores of Lake Erie. Since then, Gavin has traveled extensively across Canada and the United States. He has also ventured farther afield and led tours in the Neotropics and Africa. After high school, Gavin attended Lethbridge College, where he studied Renewable Resource Management. Gavin enjoys sharing his knowledge and passion for birds, which led him to form his own company, Meadowlark Birding Tours, in 2022.
